Aspies For Freedom

Full Version: My dad is curebie... What do I do?

My dad is a self-diagnosed Aspie, and he's curebie.
I try to get through to him, but he's really opinionated. He compares curing autism to be as noble as Juvenile diabetes (which my half-sis has). I tell him that Autism can't kill you, but type1 diabetes can under the right circumstances.
Then he just tells me to stop being a wise-ass.

Any suggestions?

say "actually im not being a smart ass i am defending my opinions and i will say what i want you cannot hold back my opinion because we live in a democracy also i find your comparison of autism to diabetes extrmely insulting me and my people are not diseased we are fine with autism thank you very much"

is that ok?

Uhh, guys... that got a little out of hand. NVM
so who was it that made the "us vs them" quotes?

And I was sorta joking about the wise-ass thing (though he damn well implies it)
Multiple quotes make a pyramid. Like this:

My dad tries to change myopinion
whoops, thought we were writing in html!
strange. I keep telling him i'm afraid of this cure, yet he just doesn't listen. My mom reassures me that she won't let them change me, but I have no idea how my dad would take that
I'm glad that the 'fight' between Kosmonaut and flardox was settled amicably - it was weird watching a 36yr old baiting a 15yr old who was trying to help a 13yr old....Rolleyes

Stilkon - I wish I could help. There have been a lot of times in my life when I was so unhappy I probably would have gone for a cure if one had been offered - because I did not know about autism or why I was different. The expectations of other people made me miserable because I could not keep up with them and I had no idea why.

Now I know why, and my differences no longer make me miserable. Other people were making expectations of a fantasy woman. Someone who looks like me but doesn't think like me. I had to convince myself that it was OK to be me. I don't have to pretend to be the fantasy woman; she doesn't exist. I don't have to be the best her, I can be the best me!

Your dad doesn't have to fit the mould that other people think that he should fit. He wouldn't be happier distorting himself. And he should tell you that you are perfectly all right the way you are; some greater help might be required so that you can understand all those odd people who think so differently to us without any attempt to turn you into one!

LOL

sorry I'm more than a bit hot- headed sometimes! Tongue

which way was it weird though?

To me it was weird

(a) because I kept thinking that such an argument simply wouldn't happen IRL, and
(b) because, of the two of you, Kosmonaut seemed the less mature! Tongue

ARE YOU SAYING IM NOT MATURE?!?!?

I AM VERY MATURE THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
ooooh look a toilet! *giggles* Tongue only joking!
ah It was probably my fault as I said I usually snap at people because of mood swings isn't puberty lovely? (sarcasm)

Re-read what I wrote, silly! Tongue

I said that Kosmo wasn't mature! Rolleyes

You were the one giving sensible advice, and Kosmo was trolling. Given that he has something like twenty years head start on you I was more than a little perturbed.

er... wow, the pyramid thing again? Anyways:

Tigger: thanks for being so supportive, it helps a lot. Depression with AS can really suck. I've told a friend or two about this site, although they have yet to create an account
