update: just beat the Boo!
I'm getting it through a computer instruction program, as is everyone else enrolled. However, I'm able to do whatever I want with it, so long as it's not illegal.  and I believe I'm getting it through Dell, but I'm not positive.  and basically the budget is pretty lenient, like 1000 dollars, maximum is about 1200 with upgrades.
I'll be using it for schoolwork, but I plan to dualboot XP with (preinstalled) Vista.  leaving one partition for me to use, and one partition specifically for schoolwork.  Not sure about network storage, as the full list of specs and features will be provided on thursday afternoon, but I doubt I'll have any network storage.
8800 is a larger number, therefore the typical consumer will think "Larger Number = better card!".   typical marketing gimmick.  I'm hoping that the computer is something other than dell though, because once I finish classes, I wan't to get rid of Vista, and use Linux, which doesn't work overly well on Dell stuff.
ooo, I might be using Nvidia anyway, since if I'm not mistaken, it works better with linux, which as I've stated before, i'll be switching to at some point.  and I'm pretty sure either HP or Compaq are the cheapest over here (though it's probably for lack of quality.  my HP Sucks!)  On the other hand, once I moved the HD, RAM, Modem, and Video Card (128 MB, Nvidia) into a compaq Tower, it ran much better, go figure
yeah, That's what I'm hearing.  I haven't tried running Linux on Dell's or ATi, but after hearing the horror stories of trying to get it to work, I'm completely scared to even attempt it

btw, what Distro did you try?  I'm planning to get Linux certified sometime next year, just for kicks (i can take other classes and certs once I finish the seven I get through this school/program), so, I'm naturally curious
Ouch, you could always try one of the windows emergency boot floppys....that Might give you access to the Format.exe command, but you'd then have to be familiar with Fdisk, and partitioning, using a command prompt thing.   otherwise, I don't see a way you could at least wipe it out to use windows or something.

I personally, just reformatted and reinstalled Ubuntu 8.04 on my 9 year old IBM laptop, that 10GB hard drive just seemed easier to clean old junk files, by fresh installing.   After all, everything not junky, fits on my mp3 player, so i have a back up drive XD
ouch, that bites.  But things happen, lol, at some point I'll get around to tinkering with some old computers I have stashed away around here (Neither work, but the could with a hard drive, and a monitor.   Soon, very soon...(specs are dirt though, so I'll just run XP)
Ha, I just noticed the above post.   But yeah, that should work, though i'm not entirely sure how Fdisk in XP works.   all I know about it is using it on Windows 98 in the CLI.
Right now I'm playing Guitar hero.   I need to get my head cleared so i can write my intro post for a text based Role-Playing academy.
