Autism, at it's most severe is a living nightmare for the individual child or adult, and advocating against a 'cure' is sheer ignorance and cruelty.

Amy and Gareth,
I sincerely hope that one day you will feel some shame for politicizing what is essentialy a serious debilitating condition, and indoctrinating your own belief system via propaganda and scaremongering vulnerable and troubled young adults and children on the autistic spectrum, who come to AFF for support and friendship from others like themselves.
Could either of you honestly say you have any real experience of living with profound autism?
I think you would benefit John Best's example. His relentless effort and determination to 'cure' his son's autism is commendable and is a credit to him.

I have,so far, refrained from posting in all 'John Best' threads as I have not read anything by anyone of that name anywhere else.

However, I think that attacking Amy and Gareth for what they have done here is unlikely to endear anyone to 'John Best' or his supporters.

As far as I can see, a 'cure' for autism is as biologically likely as a 'cure' for being white, female, blue-eyed....

And I have never seen anyone here against treatment for severe problems - but, so far, I have failed to find convincing proof that any of the treatments touted have a demonstrable effect on all autitic people. We all want to help our children overcome the hurdles that nature throws in their way - but most of us don't want to change them into someone else.

Simen, he said 'has no interest in the basic human right to exist'  that isn't saying HE has no right to exist, although me personally, I am inclined to laugh as he burns in whatever hell waits for those who chelate kids.

He meant to say that he disrespects OUR right to exist.

But yes, the OP is a tosspot, oh, and three cheers for Amy, and Gareth, theres a lot of good info here, and they havce something good going, so, uhm, yea, screw you, and the *** you staggered in with.
Amanda Baggs is not LFA or HFA,  she is autistic without any modifier.  The doctors who diagnosed her as autistic are not quacks.

John Best has removed from his blog all the posts from the end of August until last weekend when he asked for advice about stopping his son's continuous self-biting.   Autistics and allies, whom he had many times insulted,  gave him advice and expressed support and compassion.   I thought he had changed and was going to stop insulting autistics, but as Bella wrote he's gone back to his old ways.
Does Rossco have to type out his big "shut the hell up about this ***" post again?

I hope not for his sake.

Well, I think it is offensive that you refer to unborn children as "blobs of tissue" and "non persons". It is now well known that even foetuses at 6 weeks gestation have recognisably human hands and feet with fingers and toes. If you do a DNA test on even a two-cell embryo, you would find HUMAN DNA, not dog dna or cat dna or monkey dna or fish dna.

So you find my opinions offensive? I am pro abortion in early pregnancy, and so I feel entirely comfortable with these terms. I didn't even think about it being possibly offensive, since where I'm from, there is virtually no one who disagrees.

And anyway, this is simply a disagreement, and I won't modify my opinions to avoid offending anyone. I find the idea of valuing primitive beings who are no more than a few cells just because they contain human DNA and maybe vaguely resemble a full-grown human baby, while devaluing more advanced animals, to be pretty stupid.

But I'm not going to defend my opinions on that in detail. This is not a discussion about abortion. I'll simply leave it at that: I was stating my opinion, not being deliberately offensive, and I don't consider it important to express myself in the most diplomatic way possible. I am as opinionated as everyone else here, so why would I put bounds on my opinions just so those who disagree shouldn't get upset?

Simen! (with 10 posts) and Simon [sic] ( with 338 posts) - I am confused, are you the same person?
If so, why do you have two accounts?

Because there's a daily limit on how many posts you can have, and I may feel the need to defend myself and/or my opinions before that runs out. I'll add a signature to that account that states this clearly.

Simen, sorry to burst your bubble but whether or not your argumentative style is meant to be offensive, it is causing offense to some readers.

There's no bubble to be burst. I'm not blind, why do you think I keep responding? I hear people, I just don't agree with them.

In authoritarian countries, the opinions about democracy, human rights, free speech, and so on, are causing offense to the rulers. Don't you see that "causing offense" is not only dependent on the content of an uttering, but also on the receiver?

Some people cannot handle dissent, so they take offense. Now, I can understand that someone takes offense at personal attacks--I do, too. But I cannot understand why people take attacks on their opinions as attacks on themselves.

I don't think this board should become a mindless echo chamber like the government-controlled media in authoritarian countries, e.g., China. It isn't, currently, but with the way some people act here it might become one. So, unless there's an official statement to the effect that dissenting opinions are unwelcome here, I will continue to present them. If there is, I will leave voluntarily, recognizing that the priviledge of posting here is worthless.

I'm not interested in being "heard" - that's simply patronage - I'm only concerned with being listened to and taken notice of. You're welcome to post as many dissenting opinions as you like but do expect them to be challenged.

Actually, there are those who think I'm not welcome to post dissenting opinions.

But anyway, of course you can challenge them; but if you can challenge my ideas, then I should be able to challenge yours. And that is what I'm reacting to: the criticism because I simply dear to say what is, round these parts, clearly controversial.

It's controversial AND scientifically INCORRECT and that's why it is being challenged. It's nothing personal about you - just the ideas that are dodgy.

I'm surprised Rossco's post didn't end this thread.

IMO it should have Smile

Her post, however, was deliberately designed to offend.

I don't think so, and I don't really think that she wanted all the fuzz about it either.

I don't think it is much more to be done about this issue.

I can't see what Wilky hoped to achieve with her original post as surely she must have known it would cause a big backlash. It's a real shame that she has to attack Amy and Gareth after they have worked so hard to provide this website for us.

Any hope of a cure for autism is very deluded but I think what needs to be emphasised is that there is much that can done to help its various symptoms.

I also wonder why John Best let his son suffer with constipation for years as this would have worsened the boy's ability to cope in general.

Chris has severe depression, when you're got severe depression, thoughts become very black. If we all love him enough, we might be able to cheer him up a bit, we can but try. I guess also, it is good to let him know when his posts are getting a bit bleak and when he needs to leave out the doom and gloom.

Well, I struggle with depression myself and that is a major reason I dislike all this talk about killing and dying. It just isn't necessary.

I'm also a deep thinker and have been since I was very small. Chris's comments about overpopulation and impending doom don't actually show deep thinking but rather uncritical acceptance of junk science.

He's so hilarious that he is a danger to our laughing lungs!
