Reply to the Fairytale - Autism Connection article when I posted it to Babycenter's Parenting a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder by one of the posters there (names removed):

It would be alot easier to discount that vacc's had nothing to do with autism if not for the mere fact of THOUSANDS of children w/autism were not showing huge amounts of mercury and other toxic elements in their blood/hair/urine. Sorry, Mish, hate to knock the "fairytale theory".....but to us parents who have actually tested our children for mercury and know it's there, seeing a article written like this makes us sick and you have to wonder if it was "planted" to distract from the truth.....

You know I have always wondered if you have ever tested your child for mercury? Since we both have genetics links in our families and Vincent STILL tested postitive for heavy metal poisening....it would be interesting to see your child's test results.

My response:

Nope I haven't and I won't, I don't believe in putting my child through all this stuff that everyone else does and where I am possibly on the autism spectrum myself, I don't feel that it would change my mind and we have a family history on my father's side of individuals on the autism spectrum. That's just my opinion on things, you have yours. I love my child and do for my child what I feel comfortable with and if you don't like that, it's not my problem. Some of us don't believe in curing and such of autism, myself being one, some do, it's personal choice and I've seen Dylan improve in his skills more over the past 2 years than Dr. Bryson has seen with some other children with ABA and biomedical interventions and we do very little other than accept and love him for who he is.

Would you have 'cured' Einstein, Spielberg, etc? Steven Spielberg is official diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, he is one of the greatest film directors, Einstein is one of the greatest scientists, and such. Would they have what made them great if they had parents constantly poking and prodding and wanting them cured? Maybe not.

That is just my opinion, you don't need to like it.

Who said I didn't like your opinion??? You know you have been very opionated yourself lately...you don't have to be so defensive. I asked you a simple question...since I have autism on my husband's side also, Asperger's to be exact!!! Please stop being nasty to others about "how you feel"...I may state my views, but I try my upmost not to degrade other people's views. You know Mish, we both have children with autism....as do most everyone on this board, we really are on THE SAME SIDE. You should try to get along with everyone, not just the ones who share your same beliefs.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to cure autism....or there would not be so many parents trying to do it. I see BIG problems with head banging, hair pulling out, not being able to speak, walking on toes all the time, self injury behavior....the list goes on. HOW could that be ok for your child? Maybe Mish, it is your Asperger's (that you are so proud of) that gets in the way of you really understanding how most of us parents feel about autism. I feel nothing but contempt and hatred for autism and what it has stole from my son and I am PROUD that I FIGHT WITH EVERY LAST OUNCE OF ENERGY IN ME TO DEFEAT IT.......

So I'm an Aspie and proud of it? Guess she thinks I'm a bad parent now too.

Evan (9) has Apergers and knows it.  He is proud to be autistic and I feel that if he wasn't or got "cured" he would no longer be my little boy.

Autistic or not it is who he is that matters.
Good for you for standing up to that woman, Mish.  Even though you didn't change her mind, we need to try to get through to people like that.  It's no wonder her poor kid has so many problems with anxiety and self-injury when he has a mother who proudly declares that she has nothing but contempt and hatred for autism.   Sad
Mish, she was attacking you venomously, they used to do that to me on NT parents forums too.
They can post 20 articles on mercury, but if you post one against mercury they accuse you of having an ulterior motive.

What they dont realise is that the doctors who test for mercury in urine and blood are making a fortune from it, and I've seen cases of malpractice, faking test results, etc in order to get parents to spend more money on treatments.
One woman admitted that she had never heard of a child whose results came back as in the "normal range".

Funny thing is I've helped many parents on that board and rarely ever said anything bad about anything other than I don't believe in a cure and using all that stuff for my son.
I think that poster really crosses a line when she says this "You know I have always wondered if you have ever tested your child for mercury? Since we both have genetics links in our families and Vincent STILL tested postitive for heavy metal poisening....it would be interesting to see your child's test results."

Who do they think they are???
Rich maybe? Heck, maybe she could pay for stuff like that but not everyone can afford to do that stuff or would want to.
I just can't believe the stupidity of these parents not suspecting that all the positive test results could be fake or erroneous. Sometimes I wonder if NTs are incapable of learning critical thinking skills.

So this hysterical woman thinks hair-pulling, toe walking and not speaking are major emergencies. I used to toe walk, and I still pull hair, and I know someone who was a very late talker. Big @#$%ing deal! None of this stuff stopped us from getting tertiary qualifications, paid work, marrying, having kids and the rest. I know non-autistic people who have not done all or any of these things.

Mish, I think you are very brave to attempt to spread the word amongst the common kind. You must have more patience than I have.

There are people on another forum I go onto sometimes who are so afraid that there is something seriously wrong with their children because they are not saying x number of words by a certain age.

Then they feel obliged to get their children all kinds of therapies to make them "normal" and I think they are often being taken advantage of and don't realise that their children might just be a little bit slower to speak than the norm.
