AFF is populated by English speaking people from the UK/Europe, Australia/New Zealand, the US/Canada and a few other places throughout the world.

Although we all share a common language we do have some cultural differences that affect our interaction.

Before joining this website I assumed that I’d have a similar level of difficulty interacting with people regardless of where they were from. But have found cultural difference play an important part in any interaction.

I have little trouble interacting with people from Europe, Australia and New Zealand; but (with certain notable exceptions) have much greater difficulty interacting with people from the US and Canada.

I was wondering if this is down to my cultural ignorance of these countries or whether others have had similar difficulties.

Do you find it more difficult interacting with people from some countries than others?
I'm abit interested in the cultural differences.
I didn’t intend to insight any kind of anti-Americanism. The people from the US I’ve had contact with on AFF have been positively charming.Smile

I just find that when I chat to people from Australia--although they use different terminology--we seem to be discussing pretty much the same thing. The British and Australian version of whatever is being discussed is sort of equivalent. Where as when I discuss something with someone from the US there appears to be more cultural difference. You seem to have a slightly different take on things…not in a bad way. But I find it more difficult to relate my own experiences to what’s being said.

This is a very personal and subjective perception and may result from my own lack knowledge concerning American culture.

I just think its odd as I didn’t expected I’d have trouble.

Oh and Sarah…when I said I had “greater difficulty interacting with people from the US”… “with certain notable exceptions”…the exceptions I was thinking of were you and Max.

I also have little idea what our awesome aspie entrepreneur Ian is saying. He’s too cool and clever in his use of slang for me.Smile

Americans, Canadians, British, Europeans - all seem the same to me. I can pick up cultural differences on line.

I can pick up cultural differences with you Ian, you are way, way to cool and clever for me as well. I know what you say, although you are quite subtle.

I meant to say - I can't pick up cultural differences on line - everyone just seems the same.
I think people from the US and Canada tend to be a bit more serious in outlook.
"The ones I have issue with are the totalitarian, supremisist cultures."

Ah so you don't like the UK then? :p

One People, One Nation... :p

kitty.

umm - I just meant to add my point of view, that's all.
I don't speak for everyone, just myself Smile

Americans more serious? My being an American, I have some difficulty grasping this... Smile

It's somewhat funny, I think...in my case, I find myself wanting to assume people are not from the US. Perhaps I am just too used to visiting forums where the people posting are mostly outside of the US. That, and the healthcare here sucks.

You could be right about that...they do (on the whole) seem to be more interested in ‘exploring issues’ than ‘having a laugh’. Interesting…because traditionally its us British people who are supposed to be more reserved (stiff upper lip chaps etc).

Americans seem to be very competitive in general.
