Anyone practicing a martial art or fighting sport, like Karate, MMA, Boxing? Good idea?

I've never been in a situation in my life where I had to defend myself physically really. But I got very intrigued by the Russian Martial Art called Systema, and I signed up for a workshop.
Apparently, Systema and Krav Maga are very effective in real life situations, unlike stuff like Karate and Taekwondo. Krav Maga would be my second choice, but there are no trainers around here.

Not me, I am too unco-ordinated! Tongue

But my second son has a very successful WT school in Kent.

Where is 'around here'? If you give a vague area, someone on here might be able to help?

I looked it up myself and the closest Krav Maga instructor is about 40 km away, which is too far for me. I prefer getting into Systema anyway.

I've done a bit of Kung Fu, Taekwondo and Kick Boxing; and some Judo when I was little. I did okay but kept falling over Smile.

I've done some Judo in gym class at high school. I thought it was fun, although I wasn't very good at it either.

I used to do karate when younger.
Ian-how often do you get to practise this tecnique?Big Grin
i would like to learn about systema, but ive only heard about it reasontly.its a Russian game,ai?
Yeah, Systema is a Russian martial art that originated from the Spetznaz, with possibly older roots dating back to the Kossacks or something. It's a very effective fighting style, and is mostly based on science. But there's also a spiritual aspect that I don't know much about.
I had tough brother and sister and cousin.. I learn to fight early on... Just do it... I am a good street fighter.. never did self defense classes.... but if you are not a good street fighter , I insist aspies take self defense...   Its a GREAT IDEA... GO for it.

You can start to practice getting hit with pillow fights... leg wrestling is good too... learn balance etc...

I don't like to be touched, but I wait for the person to throw the first blow... once they do, their carcass is mine.

Aspies like many NT girls.. need to learn to get hit... Being hit and hitting back is a warrior mentallity... its not the same as being "touched".   When I was a kid and someone attacked me.. I would go into warrior mentality... that superceded all aspie concerns or needs....except to clobber them back.

Hence I was neva bullied as a kid and too often I was the defender of many a victim of bullies.. and I got tired of doing their job..... Victims needs to learn self defense..

They are even teaching little kids to defend themselves against pedophiles... so if they can do it.. so can older aspies..

Well I'm not looking to get a killer mentality. But I really do want to know how to defend myself properly and effectively. Right now I'm too afraid to confront people who're doing something that I want to stop, like making noise outside at night, or smoking weed at my front door.

I am not a killer.. a warrior is not a killer mentality..its a self defense mentality...

OIC that is a tough one...  That is not wrong to be afraid...Those are nutskies.... who criminal....are not your normal folk... Call the police on the police on the weed smokers... talking loudly.. ? Is it that bad? If they are that loud then they don't care about others and probably have had run ins with people before... you only hope is calling the police and if that does not work.. -->  Have you thought about moving to a better place?

I use to say " I may look little but I am wirey!"    I kept the biggest bullies at school at bay.

At reunions they still keep their manners around me.

I did cardio kickboxing for a year.

I am timid, and unco-ordinated. I will walk miles to avoid a confrontation.

BUT

if a loved one is endangered, I totally 'lose it' and become a seriously wild animal.

I've lost count of the number of times, as a 'shy' child, I fought others because they picked on my little brother......
I was also in karate for about a year when I was 9 years old.

I do wado ryu style karate with tai chi influences, it's quite similar to your systema. I would definately recommend you do try it.

I'm pretty sure I will still stick my hands in front of my face and scream and run away before using any of my karate skills. But it does help with your confidence and co-ordination and reading body language. I now know how to occupy my own space (this helps if you are touch sensitive) and feel that I can confront (speak from a distance)troublesome people in my own passive way. It also gives me a way to calm down (practicing form and breathing) releasing anger (the boxing side).
