A Napier University PhD student is to conduct research into girls suffering from Asperger’s syndrome.
Catriona Stewart of Napier University, a qualified medical herbalist, is looking for girls with Asperger’s syndrome to volunteer for the study which will look specifically at how girls with the condition experience difficulties in their daily lives and how medical herbal treatment might affect that experience.
It has been proven that anxiety is an important and little researched aspect of Asperger’s syndrome and evidence is emerging that girls with Asperger’s syndrome have a different presentation to boys and are being under-diagnosed. Western Medical Herbalism can offer safe and effective treatment for anxiety and may be an appropriate therapeutic approach for this population. It is hoped this research will provide further insight into ways of helping this group in their experiences of high levels of anxiety.
Catriona said: “This is a condition that I have been passionate about since I began my studies into Medical Herbalism. I am looking for girls aged 12 to 15 years with a diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome living in Scotland and within easy travelling distance of Glasgow or Edinburgh, who, along with one of their parents, would be willing to take part.
“The girls will also need to have access to internet computer facilities as I am keen for them to keep a computer-based journal as well as to take part in computer-assisted, confidential interviews with me. All data will be kept entirely confidential and all participants will remain anonymous for the duration of the study.”
