You could probably google an article about practicing to sing. But if you are thinking about getting really serious with a career dealing with singing, you probably want to get a singing coach.

Singing is my PASSION. Unfortunately I don't get a chance to sing in public much, just here and there.
I taught myself how to sing as a child. I would listen to all the musicals (My Fair Lady, South Pacific, etc.) over and over again until I knew all the lyrics by heart. I think I learned to sing on-key by doing that. then later I sang in choirs at school and at an Episcopal Church in Chas., SC.
My voice was at its peak about a year ago, maybe two, so your voice generally improves with age unless you abuse alcohol or cigarettes or something.
BTW, lessons help a little (I took several lessons in college before the money ran out), but don't go too far in, as a friend of mine, a singer in the Atlanta opera (chorus) told me once she loved my "untrained" voice- that it was better than hers, that untrained voices were the best in her opinion.
In my next life I would really like to have a Bonnie Raitt type existence-I'm not kidding, either!
I am an alto soprano btw...my voice can sound a lot like Judy Collins if you have heard of her. But I can mimic Barbara Streisand a little on certain songs.
I adore singing. It makes me happy. Even Hope my Aspie teen likes my voice and she is hard to please. My favorite song right now is probably "Criminal" by Fiona Apple as sung by Natalie Cole.

I took piano lessons for about three years, interuptted though by some military travel (Dad was in the Army in Europe) so at one point I could sight read. I can't sight read music anymore though!

I said sight-sing, not sight-read. There is a difference.
