An interesting story...

On Thursday there was an article in the local paper that the place where I live (Otago / Southern Lakes) is overdue for a major earthquake. Then on Thursday night (when I couldn't sleep for some other reason...) There was an earthquake. It shook for a good minute, then kept on shaking pretty much all night until morning.

Then the next morning about 10:30 or so, there was another shake, which lasted about 30 seconds to a minute -- where I could see things shaking in nearby shops, and the van I was in at the time was shaking as well like in a strong wind. Lesser shakes kept happening all through the rest of the day.

Heard on the radio that the first quake was just outside Milford Sound (which is West of Queenstown) and that it was about 6.7 on the Richter scale. The aftershocks were between 3 and 5. Then the one on Friday morning was 6.2. Made a better topic of conversation than the usual boring stuff, anyway.
There's pretty much never earthquakes where I live, and don't have much of a clear image of what kind of precautions people who experience them would have to take.
Mianly it's a bunch of pretty mundane stuff, like making sure that you know how to turn off your gas supply and making sure that stuff won't fall and hit you.
