2 Sharpish metal frame lamps (candle and electric) in the living room (high school metalwork class, me and my bro respectively) 1 Kirby cast steel based Vacuum Cleaner (believe me get that on any part of your body and you're goin down Tongue), assorted chairs and small tables, a stool...assorted kitchen implements.

And a quite strong 19 year old to wield them Tongue

Chest expander, makes a perfectly servicable nightstick, even has a little loop on the end to wrap round your wrist Tongue
My aim is to not kill but temporarily disable someone long enough for the proper authorities to arrive...I heard a good story once, one guy tackled an intruder to the floor, got someone to call the police, and sat on him til the police arrived. Another intruder had the misfortune to break into a Rugby Players house...he got rugby tackled down the stairs. Tongue
I am not, but my autistic neighbor not only is interested in emergency preparedness (with a specific emphasis on preparedness for disabled people who usually get overlooked in disasters, like New Orleans) but appears to be multiply-certified in it.

I was surprised two weeks ago when the CDC said we would need two weeks of food and water in the event of pandemic flu, not just one.  Picked up another 21 cans of Chef Boyardee something.  It won't be the flu that kills me.  It will be the acid reflux from all that sauce.

Max, how are you all preparing on the West Coast?

We're pretty much laugh at the "live in irrational fear because it makes the Republicans happy" thing. We have earthquakes to worry about.

I am pondering a "benevolant dictatorship" style currently Tongue much like the Knights of old =p
I'm a Katrina surivivor so I make sure to have the usual hurricane supplies around.

Other than that, I don't bother. I couldn't care less about terrorists or whatever boogeyman the media comes up with.

Swan, are you till in your original home or were you displaced? Louisianna or Misissippi?I know some people who were sort of "sent" out here (San Francisco Bay Area.) I hope you're doing okay. The stories I've heard from my friends about how some family are doing back home sound really difficult.

And you're right about how the media wants to kep shouting 9/11! 9/11! and wishes everyone would totally forget about Katrina.

Yes, and let's not forget Hurricane Mitch, all the twisters that regularly hit some US states, and Earthquakes. I think the best idea is to be alert but not alarmed (unless there is immediate reason to be alarmed).
