Attack On Autistic Boy, 11, Videotaped

Classmates Facing Charges

BOSTON -- An 11-year-old autistic Massachusetts boy was brutally attacked after school last month and police are now planning to charge some of his classmates in the case.
The attack happened Sept. 28 in Templeton, a community about 40 miles northwest of Worcester.
The boy, whose name was not released, was beaten after stepping off the school bus near Baldwin Drive and the entire attack was captured on videotape.

"They do know he tried to fight back, but there were five of them, so there's no way he could have," his aunt said, choking back tears. "They pushed him in a mailbox and he cut his hand and they have a picture of that."
His aunt and legal guardian said the fifth-grader suffers from Asperger's syndrome.
"When I watched the tape I was devastated. I'm absolutely devastated that these kids could do this," she said.
The kids who allegedly attacked the boy had previously teased the victim. One of the children, a girl, allegedly handed a video camera to a boy and asked him to record her as she started pushing and shoving the victim as the group neared some woods.
"They have video them pushing him in the woods and him being in there and them saying, 'Kick him while he's down,' and 'Do it again,'" his aunt said.
She said her nephew returned home 15 minutes late and struggled to tell her what happened. She said bruises appeared on his legs and arms the day after the attack. She filed a police report.
The two girls and three boys who were accused of attacking the boy were suspended from the Narragansett Middle School for the week and the school held an assembly on bullying.
"We were very upset with what we saw," School Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hemman said. "We worked very well with the police and he was right on top of that and the parents of these students were brought in and talked with and appropriate action was taken against those students."
The mother of the boy who videotaped the assault said her child had no idea what was going to happen but also did not try to stop the attack. She said now he is very remorseful and wishes he had helped the victim. She said he has since apologized to the boy.
In the meantime, the victim's aunt said she's worried he will regress.
"This impacted him greatly. He's lost a lot of his independence. The trust that he's had is not there," she said.
Police are filing charges against his classmates in juvenile court.

so sad...

That's awful.

Thank god it was taped.

When I first insisted we initiate an anti-bullying program in my school, administrators were absurdly insistent that there was no "real problem." How could anyone in a high school of over 2,000 kids claim no one was being bullied? The Magic of Denial.

The most targeted kids were gay and/or Aspie. It finally took a meeting where 11 of my kids agreed to sit down with the principal and the head counselor and tell them all the horrible stories they had kept to themselves. Even then the administration claimed that even though, yes, there was a problem, there was no money to establish a program. It took almost two years to get a program in place.

A brilliant book on the subject is Barbara Coloroso's The Bully, The Bullied and the Bystander. http://www.montrealmirror.com/ARCHIVES/2.../book.html

Disgusting..not only should the kids get charged in juvenile court but their parents as well.. .Any kid who does stuff like this..gets it from the home... In Michigan I heard that parents of Juveniles who do such horrific things can be charged themselves criminaly of their responsibility of their children doing this sort of activity .. not only Civilally but criminal as well.   We need such laws in all states.  Parents of these kids need to be held accountable.[/u]

Never having been a victim of a bully attack, but they tried.. I always came to the aid of those who could not defend themselves..  it is what our parents taught us... My daughter did the same.  It comes from the home.

I was one of the main inititators for the Victim Witness program in my state in the 70s and worked rape crisis all through college including taking care of my best friend who was raped when she was a resident doctor.   Women are often bullied .... hence I give to the womens shelter which also houses men who are abused by their spouses...

It is very very important for aspies to take dance to be agile and or self defence for protection.. all aspies must take self defense... as early as possible..  its imperative.

This Lord of the Flies behavior by these 5th graders collectively is beyond the pale. Their parents need to have their rears brought into court too.

I'm always amazed at young people video taping their crimes... A kid in my HS vandalized and videotaped it... I just don't understand why someone would do that...

But I've never understood group dynamics in hostile situations.

But I guess it is the youtube generation...

So I guess thank god for youtube?? Having proof makes it easier.

This actually reminds me of the killing of Mathew Sheppard... though that was obviously a more evil crime... they killed him... but that could be because when my sis first told me about this incident she thought they had left him for dead... obviously that's not the case.

HMMMMMMMMM

People who do it, more often do not consciously understand it. They feel their friends are backing them up in some imaginary threat by people .. including this poor kid.

Cliques of women do it too.. The just think its friends coming to their aid out of friendship... Hence most bullies are not aware they are bullying.. its taught behavior.

There's a very big difference between what's going on in your head and what happened to this boy.

A little respect about this would be appreciated.

I totally agree, as people aren't born to hate, they learn it from home. I would even consider that attack to be a hate crime against that boy.

Doyle ..good point... I think we need to start looking at aspies as a separate group of people who coudl be targeted for hate crimes.. Even Dr Vernon Smith..Nobel Prize winner for economics made the same suggestion.  I know my husband is protective of me for the first time in our lives since I was diagnosed this year.. I found it interesting that all of a sudden he interceded on my behalf regarding a doctor who did not believe I was an aspie becuase I handle myself so well in social groups.. My husband and daughter both know how difficult it is for me and how much I suffer in silence or alone when going throw a meltdown from over stress and over work.

shoot the little gits that did this ! seriously some times the cruelest beings on this planet can be children themselves

It's not always the parents of all the children who are at fault in these kinds of things. You can have a child who comes from a really good home but then they get in with "bad" friends who come from homes where they are taught to be prejudiced and horrible. Children don't necessarily have the judgement or ability to be assertive with people who want to lead them astray.

That said, I think the bullies in this case and similar circumstances should be charged with assault. A tour of a prison conducted by a tough prisoner or guard might discourage these miscreants. The idea would be to take them one by one and have the other person tell them exactly how it is in jail ie. no privacy, have to do what you're told when you're told, and if you're pretty, you will be attacked.
