When putting together my avatar, I put the infinity sign in italic. Here's the reason:
For some reason, if the infinity sign is symmetric along a vertical axis, it looks somewhat like a tandem swimming tube, or like an unusual kind of seat cushion. Not enough width-to-height ratio, and it looks like a butt. Not particularly striking.
But giving it an italic slant seems to fix that, and make it look simple yet elegant, more reminiscent of the infinity signs I'd see in my old calculus textbook. Striking, but not too threatening.
Just thought I'd share that. Thoughts, comments?
