I am a caffeine addict--coffee. It's not half as bad as soda especially if you drink it without sugar or with low sugar. The other thing with soda that gets you is the carbonation... with all the sugar and caffeine in soda, the stuff gets into your system right away and spikes your blood sugar way up... I suppose diet soda would not be a bad idea for you.
I get a lot of side effects from my caffeine addiction, some of them alarming enough to think I may have an underlying health condition--although I have not listened to advice that "longterm caffeine addiction" is causing these problems. I do not believe that "waiting 6 weeks, off caffeine" will accomplish anything.
I wouldn't have the patience to try it. I admit to having an addictive personality and life for me, is sorta like "all stimulation, all the time" or I just don't enjoy anything. I can't focus on anything without either interest in it, or an elegant backgrop of chemical stimulation.

Now I'm just a diet soda addict...
