NEW AUTISM SERVICE FOR NORTH-EAST
08:50 - 24 September 2007
A new autism service which will be the first of its kind in the north-east will be officially launched today.

Tramaine House, at Peterhead, will become the first specialist autism service in Aberdeenshire when it is officially opened this afternoon by First Minister Alex Salmond.

The new facility, and its linked service at Bergen View in Peterhead, have been built for the Aberdeenshire Housing Partnership (AHP), with funding from Communities Scotland, to provide services for people with autism who need high levels of support and supervision.

These services are part of the larger housing development at Upper Grange which includes family housing, housing for people with physical difficulties and energy-efficient housing.

The development will host nine adults with Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and the tenants will be supported by specialist services provided by The National Autistic Society Scotland (NAS Scotland).

Tramaine House has five independent flats as well as communal facilities, which will let tenants live independently and maintain their privacy, but also to participate in social activities with other tenants.

Bergen View consists of four standard flats which will be allocated to people who need lower levels of visiting support and do not require overnight support.

Aberdeenshire Council's social work and housing committee chairman Gurudeo Saluja said: "I am delighted that this service is now open - it provides the residents in Aberdeenshire suffering from autism with invaluable facilities.

"We have been working with the National Autistic Society for many years now and the fruits of that work are now clear to see."

The national director of NAS Scotland, Carol Evans, added: "Our new supported living service at Tramaine House offers each tenant autism-friendly accomm-odation and every oppor-tunity to achieve their full potential using a wide and creative range of activities tailored to each individual's needs."

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people.

Some people with autism, including those with Asperger syndrome, are able to live relatively independent lives but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of support.
