I was looking for a just general, any old topic forum but I didn't see it. So I parked this here.

Hi Guys.  I'm looking for ideas here. A bid of brainstorming maybe.  Friend of mine is trying to help someone adopt a family of 4 orphaned children.  In total we need to raise about $20,000 by end of year. I'm looking for fundraising ideas... Projects you've seen done by others... Something you just have an idea for. Large and small ideas both.  I'm not really up for selling someone elses product , but things like bake sales, casual dress down days, dinners, silent auctions.  Even if you've or read about a common idea done in uncommon way, I'd love to hear about it... I figure we span the globe here and what may be common on that side of the Atlantic may be uncommon here...so how about it, what are some of the things you've seen. Any ideas on how to make them unique.  Thanks ahead for any thoughts.  Mom of Hrick
I once directed a production of "Oliver" as a fund raiser and made about $18,000. but that's a lot of work...
I am totally useless at raising money.Rolleyes

I know that a lot of people do sponsored strange things, like abseiling down  huge buildings, walking up X number of mountains in X hours, (drivers taking them between mountains.) parachute jumping etc, these usually make a reasonable amount of money over here.

I would give a donation.
It doesn't have to be much, just what an individual can afford. 100 people giving £1 you know what I mean. ( I think that this can be done via PayPal).

Wow Max, I had no idea a show could make that much,..must have been a great production. I'll have to keep that in mind for future.   I used to do a lot of theatre but I agree, it would be a lot of work and on probably too short notice. Had considered doing some kind of talent show or coffee house for the holidays.

Thought about doing some kind of a mass babysitting night while parents shopped for xmas too. Gift wrapping?

I really appreciate the offer, WFM, but I wasn't looking to solicit donation here. (Actually I half think we ought to come up with a donation fund to help our fellow aspies as there have been at least one or two postings on forum where folks were near homelessness while others of the group do very well financially, but that is an entirely different issue. )

On the adoption, I know we can raise the funds, just looking for a unique vehicle to do it by.  We don't repel down buildings over here although there is the occassional billboard sitting. If we structure the fundraiser in such way as to  raise adoption awareness, that would be really great. I'm looking for something catchy and which might do double duty there, kind of like the Caveman Geico insurance commercials..that utilize a "so easy a caveman can do it" slogan  with a Caveman who views it as discriminatory...guess you gotta see it... but they make something as boring as insurance, cute, funny, & highly memorable.

How does the parachute fundraiser work?  We have a small local airport we might be able to use. Local balloonist too. They actually have a balloon festival here in Fall.  Very cool, but alas it is already done.
In my neck of the woods (in Australia), sausage sizzles (I think they might be called cook-outs in the USA) are very popular fund raisers. The idea is to buy sausages in bulk (thin breakfast sausages are usually the most often used) and cook them on a portable barbecue and then wrap each sausage in a piece of buttered bread. You also have tomato sauce (ketchup in USA), barbecue sauce, and sometimes fried onions or mustard and ask the customers what they want added to the sausage.

The usual charge is $1.50 Aus per sausage in blanket.
The parachute thing might not be such a good idea.

I spoke with my friend & the one she participated in was organised by M.I.N.D. UK , a very large charity with a lot of funds at their disposal.

The participants had to pay for their own training & if they raised enough sponsored cash, they were reimbursed half of what they had payed.

Most people wouldn't have enough money to participate, not most that I know at least.

It depends really on if you know any organisation, who might sponsor the whole thing.
I just found this...now I'm not suggesting............. but it could be plagiarised  & done in a different format??? just a thought.

100 Women Get Naked In The Name Of Autism

Quote:
Here is one story about a delightful little girl called Rosie who is just 5 years old and is affected by severe autism requiring a one-to-one, intensive education program that’s specially designed for her needs.
This of course costs money, and her family and friends have been fundraising in a variety of spectacular ways.

To raise money for Rosie a campaign was launched to get 100 women to pose naked in a field forming the word AUTISM for the front cover of the calendar. By the end of the first week they had 78 women signed up.

They have had 3,000 calendars printed, and if they sell all of them they will raise £26,000 for Rosie, and there fundraising burden will be lifted for nearly 2 years.

Please buy this calendar today, and help change the life of our wonderful little girl.

Cyclists ride for autism awareness

Cyclists ride for autism awareness

By David E. Malloy
The Herald-Dispatch

HUNTINGTON -- Robert Price of Westmoreland spends a lot of time driving, but Sunday afternoon the driving was all for pleasure.

Price was among about 90 people riding motorcycles as part of the second annual Road Rally for Autism Services Center in Huntington. He drives a semi tractor-trailer for a living, but rides his two-year-old Harley-Davidson motorcycle for stress relief.

"I have some friends who have autistic children," Price said Sunday afternoon. "I ride whenever I get a chance. This is for a good cause. Every little bit helps."

The motorcyclists had a police escort from the West Virginia state police and Huntington police on the two-hour ride down to Wayne County.

"The riders are from all over the Tri-State," said Jodi Fields, director of office administration for the Autism Services Center, which serves about 285 children in Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln and Mason counties. The center has about 400 employees.

"Bikers like to help a worthy cause," she said. "This is the second year we've done this. We hoped for 50 bikers this year and had more than 120. It was a great turnout. This is a fundraiser, but it's an awareness campaign, too. We need to raise awareness for autism."

The number of children impacted by autism is on the rise, she said. It is increasing from one in 166 births to one in 150 births, Fields said. "No one knows why" the increase is occurring, she said. "We need more research. The Center for Disease Control is working on it."

Mike Grady, chief operating officer for the Autism Services Center, said volunteers were able to get about 50 prizes donated from Tri-State businesses and merchants.

"We've had amazing support from the community," Grady said. "This will be an annual event."

The fundraiser garnered about $2,000 last year, and organizers are looking for a similar amount this year.

Mike Mount of Ona was among those participating in the event Sunday. "It was a nice day to get out and ride," he said. "We ride every chance we get. We thought it was for a good cause."

Taking from your Nude women idea...and restructuring it a bit, we might be able to organize a polar bear swim in the local lake come December.  Mom

My addled brain managed to combine the two separate articles from WfM, and came up with "cyclists ride nude for autism awareness".  The mind boggles...

As well as sausage sizzles, 'sponsor me to do X' things seem big round these parts - there are always kids asking for a dollar for every book they read, or ten cents for every milk bottle top they collect, or five dollars for every mile they walk while dressed as a giant hamburger.  I don't know how much they raise, but a lot of places seem to be doing it, so maybe it works?

Also, what would be the chances of getting some stuff donated, and having an auction like this one: http://members.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....yhaudience  This particular auction I think would be doing even better if it was easier to take delivery of your winnings - a lot of the items are only available to pick up in person because they're so big, which limits it to buyers in a pretty small geographic area.  If you could get gift cards or something postable, it might encourage more bids.

When I was at Uni we arranged male leg waxing to raise money for victims of the Tsunami. It is quite a good one to try amongst the student community as there is a culture of people daring their mates to do it. Also, you can get trainee beauty therapists to volunteer (although you should probably have at least one fully qualified person present, for safety reasons).
I'm not exactly sure what the final amount was, but it was pretty popular and did help to raise some money. Also, it is something that, if successful, could potentially 'tour' around other universities / colleges.
Just an idea. Sorry if it is silly.
It sounds good to me, but it's not my project.Big GrinBig GrinBig Grin
