I've always thought of diagnosis as one tool, rather than the be-all and end-all of psychology.
At the moment, psychologists ask the question "Does this person fit into a group that often needs a particular type of help with a particular kind of thing", and then offer help based on that. A better option would be to use a diagnosis as a very rough basis of understanding someone, and then asking "Does this individual need this type of help with this particular kind of thing".
Just my three cents (What with inflation and all...)
