I recently read an article on the Judge Rotenberg Center, and the torture of the children that attend there, many of whom are on the spectrum.  To check the article out, go to http://www.motherjones.com and search for 'School of Shock'.  What I read there disgusted and horrified me.

I had read in one blog that Aspies for Freedom were involved in getting this school shut down.  Are there any petitions going around to send to the legislators?  I am currently trying to find out who the appropriate person to send letters and petitions to would be.  When I find it I intend to post this on every website and forum I can find.

Would anyone here be interested in writing a letter and signing a petition to let the government know that torturing someone because they are on the spectrum isn't going to fly in this country?

Shawnia

Shawnia, I read the same article, though I'd already heard about the center from other members here. I live in the states. What do you have in mind?  I don't know that a letter or petition is going to make much difference.  We need to change the law and then see that humane standards are enforced and violators lose licenses.  Are there any initiatives?  The center is actually located near Boston, not DC.  You'd think there are enough liberal lawyers in Boston for somebody to smell a good pro bono case.

You will probably find this Blogg informative & disgusting.

Blogg re Judge Rotenberg Centre

We had a news story on the Judge Rotenberg Centre here. There was a lovely, gentle looking girl in the story, she was hooked up to a electrical device and when she saw the device that emits the electric shock, she cowered with fear. It was awful - just beyond belief that such a place is allowed to exist.

So I've searched the net over and not found much.  Here is the only site that seems dedicated to stopping this sort of thing: http://community-2.webtv.net/CIBRA/CIBRA/

Didn't see anything really new there, though.  This is troubling.  What is actually being done?

I found this on the Blogg, I don't know if any of you USA citizens will find it of any use or not, but here goes:-

Quote:
Currently, New York Senator Martin J. Golden has introduced Senate Bill 6876, which if approved by vote, will prevent New York schools from sending students to the Judge Rotenberg Center. If you live in the state of New York please email, phone or write your local state senator and plead with them to pass this bill. Here is a link to the text of the bill: http://assembly.state.ny.us/le.....&sh=t
This link will allow you to track the progress of the bill: http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?bn=S06876
You will find email addresses for New York Senators at this link: http://www.senate.state.ny.us/.....l?openform
Here is a link for contacting lower house members by email: http://assembly.state.ny.us/mem/

If you are not a New York resident, it may still be worthwhile to email your concerns. You may also want to investigate whether your state is sending children to the JRC. If so, please contact them and remind them that the aversive therapies used by the JRC violate the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, which requires an extensive focus on positive behavioral interventions. Please contact the Federal Department of Education with any complaints through this link: http://www.ed.gov/about/office.....tml?src=ct

It takes hours to read the whole Blogg with all links.

This is the Rotenberg home page:-http://www.judgerc.org/

This is worth reading :- http://boston.com/news/daily/15/school_report.pdf
Observations and Findings of Out-of-State Program Visitation Judge Rotenberg Educational Center

This is the dietary regime :-  ( read recommended as 'this is what you are getting' no argument  !! )  :-

      Foods To Eat
         1.  All whole grains and whole-grain cereals, such as brown rice, corn, oatmeal, barley, millet and wheat berries; many packaged grain cereals, puffed grains and other healthful cereals.
         2.  Squashes, such as acorn, butternut, buttercup, pumpkin and zucchini
         3.  Root vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams
         4.   Legumes such as peas, split peas, black-eyed peas, string beans, and such beans as chick-peas, lentils, and adzuki, navy, pinto and black beans
         5.   Green and yellow vegetables, such as collard greens, broccoli, kale, mustard greens, cabbage, various types of lettuce, and watercress; celery, cauliflower, carrots, asparagus, and tomato.
         6.   Fruit, such as apples, bananas, berries, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, and pears. (Limited to two servings per day.)
         7.   For most people, simple sugars, salt and spices used sparingly at the table rather than in cooking.

      Foods to Avoid
         1.  Avoid all red meat, including beef, pork, and lamb. All are rich in fat, cholesterol, and other harmful constituents.
         2.  Avoid all poultry and fish. Poultry has about the same amount of cholesterol as red meat, while fish varies, depending on type. Some fish are higher in cholesterol than red meat, others lower.
         3.  Avoid all dairy products, including milk, yogurt and cheese. Low-fat dairy products are not recommended because of potential health hazards including allergies, childhood diabetes, arthritis and lactose intolerance.
         4.   Avoid all oil, including olive, safflower, peanut and corn oil. Oil is simply a liquid form of fat.
         5.   Avoid eggs. Eggs are abundant in fat and cholesterol.
         6.   Avoid nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and soybean products (including tofu, soy cheese, and soy milk). Soybean products are high in fat, unless they have been specially processed (low-fat varieties are also not recommended).
         7.  Avoid all dried fruit and fruit juices. (Eat the whole fruit instead).
         8.  Avoid all flour products, such as breads, bagels and pretzels. The less a food is processed the better it is for weight loss. Flour products are composed of fragments of grain, or relatively small particles, which increase absorption and slow weight loss.

For those that live in the United States, here are the following websites that will give contact information to senators and representatives.  Also, the torture school is located in Canton, Massachutsetts.

To contact Massachutsetts senators and representatives:

To find contact information for those who live in other states:

Aside from this, you can contact local advocacy groups and alert them to this issue.  I’m already contacting other groups about this issue.

Letter writing and petitioning en masse will let legislators know that people are irate about this issue.  If we can get local advocacy groups to spread the word about this torture more people will get involved.  Who knows, maybe even a protest in Canton will come from it.  If we do nothing, then nothing will happen.  At least if we do something, even something as simple as writing a letter or posting information on another forum to try to get more people involved then there is a chance that it will make a difference.

OK -- I am sending an inquiry to the whole lot of them with special follow phone calls to Kennedy and Kerry.  What kind of law allows this to continue?

I just read this, and it is dusgusting. I thought America had human rights? Human rights prevent torture, and removal of freedom. How can anyone send their kids to such a horrible place? And how do they get approval from courts!?!

http://www.judgerc.org/

I surfed a bit and found their list of punishments:

Using those definitions of the various categories, JRC currently uses the following decelerative procedures.  Each procedure that is asterisked is one for which JRC seeks authorization from a probate court to use, in the context of a substituted judgment authorization.

Differential reinforcement procedures
Breaking a reward contract without a verbal reprimand

Differential reinforcement procedures with verbal reprimand
Breaking a reward contract with a verbal NO and response cost,
          e.g., token/point/money fine
     *Food programs

Extinction
     Ignore

Response cost
     Token, point or money fine
     Loss of privileges

Overcorrection
     *Positive practice overcorrection
     *Restitutional overcorrection

Application of sensory punishment
     *Water spray

Application of physical punishment (includes movement limitation)
     *Helmet as punishment
     *Movement limitation as punishment

Contingent electric shock
     *Contingent electric shock

The people that run this school are sick. I truely cannot think of why this school has not been shut by the US government. This makes me even more glad I live in the UK.
I bet one of them is watching.
before long we will have one defending the place.  Rolleyes
There were certainly a few on that Blogg pretending to be parents & just individuals.

They were caught out through 'pinging' & had to admit who they were.

You may be surprised to know that MANY parents actually do defend the horrible evil place.Sad

I recently blogged about the Judge Rotenberg Center and a few employee’s and ex-employee’s came to offer their opinions that it was OK to inflict pain on people until they did what you want.

Like most quacks, they failed to show any evidence that their way was any better then a non-pain inducing methodology so one was left with the conclusion that they used pain as a tool because it appealed to their natures as people.

Anyway, I’ve been taking a long hard look at the JRC website and received a bit of information which led to what I believe is a breach of US law governing personal data and data protection issues.

I’m going to have to talk broadly here as I don’t think it would be ethical for me to show you exactly what steps I took to stumble across this data. However, not only are the full names of all current staff members on public display, there are documents I’ve found which contain a full listing of all current students, represented by initials, together with details about which schools/units they’ve attended prior to JRC. There are also documents which mention at least 4 students full names, together with photographs of these students.

Let’s also be clear that the method I utilised to get to the data under discussion did not in any way reflect any hacking, cracking, injecting or otherwise any unethical practices. It came from a chance mouse click and some really dreadful .NET coding on behalf of the JRC’s web developer(s).

In the US it is the Dept of Health and Human Services which have governance over the regulations that dictate what is legally acceptable and what’s not under HIPAA.

From the HIPAA site:

Generally, what does the HIPAA Privacy Rule require the average provider or health plan to do?

For the average health care provider or health plan, the Privacy Rule requires activities, such as:..[]...Securing patient records containing individually identifiable health information so that they are not readily available to those who do not need them.

It seems pretty clear to me (but remember I’m not a US citizen or overly familiar with the intricacies of US law) that the posting of student personal data on an insecure web server where it can be accessed by a chance mouse click is a clear contravention of the above legal guideline.

I posted what Id found to an American friend I trusted and this person was able to replicate what I’d done and was also presented with the same confidential data. As an American citizen my friend is free to make a complaint following the process outlined here and in fact I understand this process is underway. The official complaint contains full details of how the data was discovered and exactly which data it was that was found.

Upon checking the source code of a few pages (the source code is the code that a web page is written in) I was shocked to find the following statement:

<!--#include virtual = "connectDB.asp"-->

I have altered the path and file name referred to but essentially this file is used to declare a connection to an online database. I now knew the exact path to the .asp file that contained the database server name, username and password which means that it would not have been to difficult, if I was so inclined, to connect to the JRC online database. I was not so inclined and so I have no real idea what’s in the database but I would imagine it would be pretty important stuff. It’s also further illustration of the woeful state of the security on the JRC website.

Student safety is paramount and so if any JRC staff are reading this, please email me and establish exactly who you are (no anonymity allowed) and I will tell you exactly how this confidential data was accessed. I’ll even make a few suggestions as to the nature of the coding error and how you might fix it.

I don’t suppose this breech will result in JRC getting shut down but I think it will ensure the close attention of data protection specialists and probably ensure a hefty fine. Here’s hoping. I’ll keep this blog up to date with how the complaint goes.

I found this just now.

If I am posting too much re this subject will someone please tell me, I tend to get on a roll & continue long after others get fed up.
Thanks

A parents perspective ????????

Quote:
However, one of the most disturbing aspects of the JRC is the readiness with which it is embraced by its students parents. the JRC maintains a blog in which it posts messages of support from students parents. None of the students views are represented. A typical example is below:

“Before placing my daughter Julissa at JRC, I suffered tremendously because of her behaviors. She did not obey my rules, she did not listed to me, and she used to go out without permission. When she returned home and I tried to talk to her, she used to get very angry and hit me. When she did something wrong and I tried to give her advice, it was for nothing because she did not listed. One time, she even took money from me without me knowing. She took my ATM card, and since she knew my pin number, she took out $700.00 dollars that I was saving for that month’s rent. At home, we hardly ever slept. My other daughter, my granddaughter, and I were very nervous because of Jusissa’s behaviors.”

“Julissa was admitted to the Metropolitan Hospital in two occasions. Also, she was admitted once at Holewood Hospital in Queens. Every time she left the hospitals and returned home, she exhibited the same behaviors.”

“Even though my daughter was admitted into two different hospitals and was placed into different treatments, and many prescribed medications, nothing really helped her. I give my testimony of faith that nothing has been better than the treatment or better said the discipline that JRC school has.”

This sounds (to me) like a naughty girl. But a girl deserving of the sort of regime described above? Electro therapy because a child wouldn’t follow her mother’s rules?

Sound to me like an average teenager, perhaps a bit naughty but-----------

Of course it isn't all good, nor is it all bad.  Life is usually not that simple.  These comments appear to be centered on a single case.  I am sure that the progress toward torture is rarely a sudden one, so these people have moved slowly to the position they are presently.  Then an outsider, who has not moved slowly toward that position says, "Hey, that's torture!"  I hardly expect them to respond, "Yeah, we figured torture was our best bet ...."  because that isn't how they've held it in their minds for so many years.

When I was reading about the boy who harmed himself, I was reminded of a situation several years ago, when the hospital in which I was working was closing.
For back ground. The Government had decided to close ALL hospitals for Learning Disabilities & place the patients into the community. ( realistically they were aware that there was no way ALL of these patients would be able to be safely cared for in these settings ) The Hospital had started off with a couple of wards for the 'bad boys' & 'bad girls', this evolved into quite a large RSU in the same grounds. In the 'normal part of the hospital' there were quite a few very very severe self harmer's, who were looked after by increased ratio of staff with good effect.
As the wards where they lived were to close, they were discharged to their area of origin under Social Services for 24 hours, then re admitted into the RSU.
This was so that SS would pay for their care, whilst before it had been free.
Because of money, patients had to be traumatised twice by moving, instead of being walked / taken in a wheelchair a couple of hundred yards.

The situation that I was reminded of was a young man with a very low IQ, severe self harmer & would smash up furniture, they allowed the smashing of the furniture, as it took his mind off injuring himself & although he was medicated, they didn't want him to be a zombie.

Yeah. My parents put me there in the late 1980's and they think the place was/is wonderful. They even wrote glowing letters of praise on the school's propaganda site. All horseshit.

Now, the school is accepting more and more students who were like me: Violent adolescents who act out due to piss-poor parenting. The parents failed in their parental duties, so, the school steps in, and, through a relentless campaign of fear, punishment, and humiliation, scares the students into well-behaved emotionless automatons.

Of coure, the problem with this system, is, once the misbehaving child/young adult is removed from the watchful eyes of their myriad cameras and trained-to-abuse staff members, and the person can cognitively realize that the controls and punishments that held them prior are no longer in place, they will naturally "regress" to their former state. This is primarily because the school concentrates entirely on consequating inappropriate behavior. They're only concerned with exploring causal realtionships theroretically, but not clinically. Also, through the perpetual fear of extreme punishment/humiliation, the student (I can personally attest to this) may experience a marked decrease in "socially maladaptive" behaviors, but, this will be replaced by anxiety and what could be described as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

In my own case, I have 3 years of my life in which, not only was I subjected to cruel and unusual torture of botht he physical and mental varieties, but, I have an experience that is unparalled and inexplicable. When I explain this experience to people outside of the mental health/autism communities, I am subject to a wide spectrum of negative responses ranging from disbelief to outright ridicule. Often times, is as if I was claiming to have been abducted by aliens. Oddly enough, had I claimed alien abduction, more people would have a better frame of reference for that than my seemingly bizarre claim to have been imprisoned in a New England boarding school with *** children who were shocked and had ammonia pellets dissipated in their nostrils, etc.

I am so very sorry to read that this happened to you, of course you would be anxious & suffer PTSD,  have you been able to have any help?

I certainly believe you & I know that not being believed is really dreadful & adds insult to injury
