Even without considering the moral issues re: "curing" autism, when are people going to realize that chelation does nothing for it?  Sad
That is so sad... How can the doc still be treating patents if he has a criminal trial coming up? That seems odd... but I'm no lawyer.

Mostly what's so sad about it is that those NT parents are so desperate to try to change their kids and don't try to relate to them on their level. So sad.

What is chelation exactly? I'm sure know one has tested to see what it does to people that don't have metal poisoning... (sarcasm)

Chelation is standard treatment for mercury poisoning in particular. That's why the mercury militia push it as a cause of Autism - because there's a small amount of mercury in thiomersal/thimerosal (depending on which country you live in). That's a preservative used for vaccines - hence their attack on vaccines like the MMR (measles mumps rubella). It was invented in 1931, and the mercury militia push that as the birth date of Autism given the Leo Kanner did his work on Autism in 1943 - tying in with their theory.

Of course the smart people know that Autism has been around for a lot longer than that!

Yeah...they were just called "idiots," "raised by wolves," and "eccentrics."

Perhaps there was simply something about the academic culture at the time that led people to look into these children and find a certain common ground between them.

I think it's because the doctor does not have his medical liscence revoked. At the time of the article they were trying to get his medical liscence revoked, but has not yet. (at the time of the article)

Thanks for the blog link, Luai. I knew that chelation was a very dubious "treatment" but had no idea it could be so dangerous. It's so awful to hear about this child's death, and about unnecessary and dangerous medication being administered to children with ASD.

Are these parents who refuse to get their kids the immunizations prepared to home school?  I'm always told that my kids can't come to school at all unless their immunization records are all up to date.

In the US you can sign a personal exemption paper, that is available from the local health department, in order for you child to attend public school.  However, if there happens to be an outbreak of a particular illness, the child may be excluded from the school environment until the outbreak is over.

Thimerasol is a completely seperate issue from the MMR.  Thimerasol is a preservative that was used (and still is to some extent) in many vaccines.   The MMR is a live virus vaccine so it can not have presevatives such as thimerasol, which would kill the live viruses.  The hypothesis for MMR causing autism and the hypothesis for thimerasol causing autism are completely seperate issues and were not confused in the US Vaccine Court.

General point. If thiomersal wasn't part of the case against the MMR jab in the US Vaccine Court in June - how come it was specifically mentioned in the prosecution's opening remarks that the Autistic girl was injected with 12.5 micrograms of mercury each time she got an immusation shot?

The Vaccine Court dealt with two seperate scenerios.  1- Thimerasol in vaccines causing autism.  2- The live viruses in MMR vaccines causing autism.

It was one case. Everything was put together.

You are right.  It was one case.  However, the concern over thimerasol and MMR were still addressed as seperate issues.  I think I just read your other post wrong.

Personally I was none too keen about getting MMR jab for my daughter and put it off until she was about 3.

My concern was about pumping three powerful live virus jabs into such a young child. The MMR was developed with cost effectiveness in mind, it is cheaper to do it all at one time then stagger it in three stages. Measles vaccine obviously needs to come first and early, rubella used to be given to girls at around 12, to protect them before they reached "child-bearing" age, and mumps was chiefly dangerous to boys and men from adolescence onwards. MMR was brought into use (at least in the UK) to save the health service the time and money of separate age and gender related vaccinations. I was working for the NHS and read the reports on this.

Doctors were set (economic based) targets for MMR take-up, parents refusing MMR were (at some surgeries) threatened with being removed from patient lists, and if they requested measles only jabs, were told that it would have to be done privately (and expensively).

I was a refusenik. Not because of autism fears (my girl was already autistic, though I didn't know it then). Because she had other serious physical problems that were still being investigated, and I didn't want to risk exacerbating them, or confusing the diagnostic tests that were being done. I gave in at 3, cos she was stronger by then, and was about to start nursery.

As to this business about "mercury poisoning".......I've just visited the "autism speaks" site for the first time....those people are very scary, I see why you all loathe them so much. I find their spiel about mercury poisoning and "autism cures" very  frightening. The things they are prepared to do to "cure" their autistic children.......those poor children should be protected from these people (the parents and their pet quacks).
