0 Zero...because its so mysterious; its sort of like nothing and everything at the same time...cool Cool
Favourite whole number:142857. (the only cyclic number in the decimal system)
Favourite irrational numbers: phi, the most irrational of all numbers, and of course pi - because I like circlesSmile.
Preferred numbers in everyday life: primes.
Recently I've found some interest in 209. The house where I grew up sits near road # 209. In Sweden everybody has a 10 digit number and 209 is digits 7, 8 & 9 in my number. If the letters of the alphabet is replaced by numbers, the sum of my full name comes to 209.

Otherless it would be 597. I found a small metal plate in 1985 with these digits stamped into it... but I don't want to elaborate on the reason why I like it so much as I'm afraid it would de-mystify the magic.
One of my favorite numbers is Euler's Constant[*gamma*]
Oooh, Hyke, I took a screenshot of this page....  because when you posted to say there were 7777 threads, your post was #13.  I want to remember this moment.  Big Grin
My favorite number is 7, with 13, 3, and 9 following behind.  These are magic numbers.  7 is also my personal lucky number.  I want to get married on 3/7/13 (or 7/3/13, I suppose, or 9/7/13 or 7/9/13, ect.).
The only thing that could make the above post better would be Hyke having 333 posts.  I'm going to wait for that moment and come back for another screenshot.  Tongue

Had I been cool, I might have said 1729 or even 42, to show my belonging to the cool in-crowd that gets it (anyone else?).

But in reality, I've a curious fascination for powers of two: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536...I don't know why I have the sequence stuck in my head, but it's there. Perhaps that makes it my "favorite number series" -- as if that gives much meaning.

Maybe it's that story of the guy who wanted payment in grains laid on a chessboard - 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, 32768, 65536, 131072, 262144, 524288, 1048572, 2097144 etcetera...

1066 & 4711 is numbers I like too.

Infinity

I don't "get" 1729, but I LOVE 42.  Ever since I read A Hitchhiker's Guide, I've loved 42, and I look for it everywhere.  I SCREAMED at the top of my lungs when I saw a schoolbus with the number 42, I was that happy about it.  Big Grin

Speaking of schoolbus numbers, when I first rode the bus I was scared of not remembering my bus number, which was 53.  Then my dad told me "53+53+1=107".  Because of the seven in 107, I have never since forgotten my bus number.  My mom (the most NT of anyone in my family) cannot understand this at all.  She thought the equation would confuse me.

I don't really have any specific favorite number, but in general I prefer even numbers to odd ones. It's like they seem friendlier or something, and 36 in partcular seems like a friendly number to me.

Also, ever since Daniel Tammet said that 284 is an ugly number, I think of it as un ugly number as well, along with 28 and 84 (through their association with 284).
My favorite number is 17.

number 13. If its my favourite number, it cant be unlucky for me!

13 is my favourite number too.  I gathered that as it's unlucky for so many people, it must be lucky for some.  Plus Pythagoras said that it is the most dynamic number.

rossco

I like the number 69. Have no idea why?

Try this process for 196 and you will waste more than an afternoon,
196 does not form any palindromes at all.
There are many of these Lychrel Numbers that have vexed many of us number buffs. Enjoy!!

AFAIK it is unknown whether Lychrel Numbers really NEVER build a palindrome. It's one of unsolved mathematical problems - there is no clear proof to it.
