Full Version: what about enzymes?

I just read a book about enzymes.  The author maintains that some people cannot "break down" wheat, dairy, and other kinds of foods, and that this can cause neurological problems.

She says if we could take certain enzymes to help us break down our food, it would make us feel better and eliminate things like stimming, migraines, sensitivity to light, hyperness, anger, etc. etc.  Taking these enzymes is easier than going on a GF/CF diet.

Has anyone tried enzymes?  Results?

I'm trying to get real data based on personal experience rather than "advertisements" trying to sell me something.

Thanks for any experiences you can share.  You are all such an awesome group to meet.  I love this site!
You need enzymes specific to the particular food.  An example is lactase for people who otherwise can't deal with dairy. That one works well.

Thank you, jxenu.  Have you tried it?  How did it help?  Where do you buy it?

It prevents gassiness/upset tummy when eating dairy. In my grocery store it's on a shelf above the milk, plus they sell "Lactaid" with the enzyme already in it.

I buy Lactaid milk now too 'cause I am slightly allergic to dairy. I know for a fact I don't bloat anymore and my stomach is flatter!

Plus, if you are allergic and combine regular milk with something sweet in the morning you are asking for trouble and unnecessary time in the bathroom if you know what I mean! Wink

The stuff is expensive, though, upwards of $4 for 1/2 gallon here in the US.

I also read where as we get older we don't produce as many enzymes, so I'm glad I went on it.
NeuroZym (someone who sells enzymes to autistics) have convinced my mom that I shouldn't drink milk. So I stopped drinking milk when I was thirteen, but I didn't take those enzymes, because I didn't feel any difference after stopping drinking milk. I all looked like a scam to me, but at least one other autistic I know as the son of one of dad's friends is said to have improved dramatically after having begun on a diet without milk.

Even though I didn't notice any difference when beginning on a diet without milk, my parents thinks I changed abit. When I ask why they say that I seem happier, less depressed. There was actually a definite change when I stopped getting any milk, and that was that I got away from the bullying in primary, and into a new class that was actually tailored for me so that I wouldn't meet any new bullies.
