I keep hearing about a genre of music called indie rock. What is exactly involved in that genre, and what are examples of artists in that genre?

Indie stands for Independent, as in the bands are signed to an independent record label that doesn't have major funding. That means they have more control over their record (debuting artists) and less finances. I typically love Indie music since its so different and diverse than whats constantly fed through countdowns and radio.
Indie itself isn't a musical genre because its more or less describing a record signing, but it has a more mellow tone than traditional rock.

Homestead Records; Blast First; Ecstatic Peace; K 422; 4AD; Factory Records; are some legendary indie labels...
yeah, independant music is great, and covers all genres, whereas *indie rock* has become synonimous for band's who can't play their instruments very well, oh, and they all sound like the jam...lol x
