Hi everyone - I've been reading the posts on this site for a long while now. The reason I finally decided to make an account and start posting myself is that I've decided to start letting people know about being Aspie.

The way I've decided to do this is to buy one of the AFF mugs (http://www.cafepress.com/aspies), put it on my desk at work, and wait until people start asking questions.

It should arrive this week...
Let us know how it goes

FANTASTIC IDEA!  Mom of Hrick
Hope it goes well for you.
There's a chance people won't mention it at all- I dyed my hair bright green and I got very few comments on it from anyone who wasn't a very good friend (although I got lots of stares).  People may think it's tabu to talk about or "impolite" to bring up.  Also, you may get people who think to themselves "oh, so so-and-so has an autistic kid" and not ever mention it to you.  Some people may not even notice the mug.
Or, you may not.  It can be hard to predict these things.

It's true - I thought about those things too, but I couldn't think of another way to do it and still avoid the "blurt" factor. Hopefully it will only take one comment to start the ball rolling.

If only someone started a "hire a commenter" business, then I'd be set. *smiles*

Eh... are you "out" with your AS, Luai?  I hope you don't find it a personal question.

Myself, I like to keep a low profile and I don't like any kind of attention, so I think revealing AS would work against this.

I don't have a diagnosis yet (actually, I might not WANT to get one ever....  I'm still thinking about it), but I do sometimes tell people "I have traits of asperger's syndrome/autism" or that I suspect I have it.  Usually I only tell people this if the subject comes up somehow or if I need to explain some wierd behavior of mine to them.

I remember putting a lot of research into self-diagnosis, and then when I went for the official dx I thought they put very little effort into it. Unless you ever want to apply for special services, I'd consider your self diagnosis to be much more reliable than anything a psychologist could provide...

It looks like you were right about this one - still no reaction at work... Ah well.

Sad   That's too bad.  What's the dress code like there?  Could you wear an aspie pride t-shirt?
