Dvd/film "Perfume, the story of a murderer"

Does anyone understand this film.  Please explain it to me.  I watched it the other night and I don't understand it.
I read the book once. Its a strange story indeed. Of a boy born and layd in fishofffal. He has no odour, and is not loved. His whole life he is searching for odour. He has the perfect nose. With odours he can become who he wants. People treat and (dis)like him according to how he smells. His wish is to be liked like a beautifull virgin. And therefor searches how to get that odour and how to put that odour into a perfume.
He kills in abundance to get his method right.
He succeeds in getting the odour he wants.

And then I'm getting blurry. What happened after that in Paris? He lived, but it was known he was the killer.

And then, if I remember right he splashed himself once more with this magic odour of the most beautiful smelling virgin in the whole world and walks into a group of rough guys in a dark place.

I'm not sure if I remember the end right. It is strange. And it did not make sense then.

Now its puzzling me again.
He thinks he can capture the smell of beauty and if he can possess it everyone will love him.  I feel the somewhat the same way only not about smell and I don't murder people or want to murder people.  I dream of acceptance by people if only I had some exceptional talent or beauty or attribute.  Often celebrities find out that the admiration they receive is phony and swallow that they become depressed addicts or even kill themselves.  Our self love has to be strong and come from somewhere.  Do we get it from our parents?

I guess I would have to read the novel a few times again.  I still don't really understand.
